7th graders have recently begun talking about their school day and as mentioned in the previous post, it is a topic that they really enjoy as they are new to the middle school wing of our school and are new to having multiple teachers. We’ve been using vocabulary to talk about the school day, subjects, who teaches the classes, what periods they are in, what classes are interesting, boring, practical, etc. This week they delve a little deeper with their conversations using subject pronouns and verbs. My goal for my students is to teach grammar as a concept and use it in context. That’s not to say that I don’t sometimes stop and do a grammar pop-up lesson when students need it. At the middle school level, I find that students need it. A quick and fun activity usually fits the bill and makes it a little less boring.
This week as we start using these grammar concepts. I am introducing it in context by continuing to use Roberto, a character that I created to introduce the vocabulary. Roberto is a good student, a little lazy at times, and has some trouble with organization. Once we start using subject pronouns, I circle and say (Roberto) “él es desordenado” ¿tu (point to a student) eres desordenado(a)? ah clase ella/él no es desordenado, you can see where this is going. I also use a video from Teacher Catalina which, by the way, provides a free review sheet! If you haven’t seen her videos or visited her website, I’ve linked her website below. She provides really engaging videos that my students enjoy. When we I introduce -ar verbs, we do the same thing type of activity – “él estudia mucho para la clase de inglés, estudias mucho?
I include the dice game to reinforce and practice the grammar concept. I’m sure you’ve heard of it, it’s been around for a long time. It’s fun and engaging and a great way to practice these emerging grammar structures. However, this game is very hands-on, it’s played with dice, a pen/pencil and paper in groups of 2 or 3, and with the pandemic, not a good idea, so I made my own updated version by creating these interactive Google Slides and using a virtual dice website. It definitely fit the bill and provided a very engaging activity for my students. I used it during an observation and my observer liked how with this activity the students were able to interact with each other.
This is where my 7th graders are right now. I’m getting ready to introduce their first reader next week so that we can continue implicitly learning using subject pronouns, the present tense, recycling vocabulary learned for likes, dislikes, telling time, and so much more. I will be sharing what I will be doing with the reader as I go along. Follow my Facebook page for updates on what I’m doing with this reader and my 8th graders.
